PanARMENIAN.Net - Central Bank Governor Martin Galstyan addressed inflation-related topics during a press briefing, including the possible impact of imports from Azerbaijan on domestic prices. According to him, no in-depth analysis has been conducted yet, as the volume of goods imported from Azerbaijan remains very limited.
"We haven't done such analysis yet, because the quantities and volumes of those goods are quite minimal and restricted," he said, as reported by Panorama.am .
On the topic of fuel imports, Galstyan noted that their effect might be visible in January's inflation figures, depending on the weight of the imported product in the consumer basket.
"I would mainly emphasize open borders. If we achieve open borders and free movement of goods and services, both imports and exports, I believe it will have a positive impact on us," the Central Bank chief added.
He also commented on the possible implications of the TRIPP (Trans-regional Infrastructure and Policy Platform) initiative, saying he currently lacks enough information to assess its impact.
"We can only discuss this once we have at least a draft version of the project on paper and can analyze the anticipated steps, the investors involved, the scale and timeline of the investment, and whether it would consist of direct investments or loan-based instruments. Only then can we understand the impact. At the moment, I would refrain from making any comments due to insufficient information," Galstyan said.
On December 19, a train carrying Azerbaijani gasoline-22 wagons from the SOCAR company-entered Armenia, followed by two additional shipments.
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan commented on the issue, stating: "As I understand it, the gasoline purchase is quite advantageous for Armenian citizens. I've seen boycott calls, but also heard of queues forming for this gasoline."
When asked why Azerbaijan would sell Armenia cheap fuel, he responded: "Because peace is established and cooperation must form. Their goods must pass through our territory, and ours through theirs."
