PanARMENIAN.Net - Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan could improve economic development in the region and strengthen stability and security, former European Council President Charles Michel said in Baku.

Michel described the decision to reach a peace agreement as a very courageous step, APA reported.

"I strongly support all efforts aimed at strengthening this peace agreement because I believe it will create a very solid foundation for the development of connectivity in the region and improve economic development.

At the same time, thanks to greater stability and security, it will improve people's well-being and create opportunities for implementing various projects," Michel said.

Charles Michel was among the members of the jury for the Zayed award, which was granted to Armenia's prime minister and Azerbaijan's president for efforts toward peace.

Commenting on this fact, former Armenian ambassador-at-large Edmon Marukyan wrote: "If Charles Michel's vision was an ethnically cleansed and Armenians-free Artsakh, then it should have been honestly stated from the very beginning and a prize offered for it. In my memory, Charles Michel is particularly associated with the fact that only 12 days after the meeting held in Brussels on August 31, 2023, Armenia was subjected to a large-scale Azerbaijani attack: sovereign territories of Armenia were occupied and remain so to this day, an Armenian female soldier was mutilated, unarmed Armenian prisoners of war were executed at a position, and there was no international claim, no investigation, no condemnation - zero consequences."
