Kazakhstan's leading oil company reports 83 pct drop in Q1 output

ALMATY, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan-based oil producer Tengizchevroil's output dropped 83 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 to 5.7 million metric tons, the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported Friday.

A fire broke out on Jan. 18 at two turbine transformers at Tengizchevroil's Tengiz oilfield, one of the world's largest, damaging parts of the power distribution system and forcing a halt in production at the Tengiz and Korolev fields.

The shutdown cut crude exports via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, leaving Kazakhstan about 5 million tons below its oil production target in the first four months of 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and National Economy Minister Serik Zhumangarin said.
